Preface
In last few years Bangladesh achieved tremendous advancement in many sectors, health sector being one of the pioneers in this progress. With superb GO-NGO efforts and unprecedented cooperation from general people we have succeeded to control many life-threatening Communicable Diseases (CDs). The life expectancy at birth rises to a new height. But, new challenges also emerged before us in the form of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) including cancer. National Institute of Cancer Research & Hospital (NICRH) is the tertiary level government institute which offers wide range of cancer related services at low or free of cost. There are 23 fully active departments at NICRH. They are always trying to cover every aspect of cancer management from prevention to cure, from diagnosis to research and from surgery to rehabilitation. Recently we have accomplished some much needed up gradations of the institute like commissioning of the central Oxygen line, CT simulator and Colposcopy machines. Fourth OT starts functioning. The work of link corridor between administrative building and main hospital building has begun. Highly sophisticated & dedicated chemotherapy safety cabinet starts functioning from March 2015. We are really happy to announce that from April 2015 the hospital has turned into a 300 bedded facility. Besides offering clinical services to cancer patients the institute also involved in academic activities. It offers MD/MS degrees in Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology and Surgical Oncology disciplines. In near future new courses will be incorporated.
With the line of the present government’s dream of making Bangladesh a digital one NICRH is also trying relentlessly to make significant contribution in this regard. We extend our services to every corner of the country through the means of Telemedicine unit well supported by MIS of DGHS.

Important information and necessary issues for National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICR&H)- Mohakhali- Dhaka
1) National Institute of Cancer Research & Hospital (NICRH) is the only tertiary level government institute involved in cancer related services including cancer awareness, cancer screening, cancer diagnosis, cancer treatment. Everyday a lot of patients are managed here as OPD patients. In a country there should be one radiotherapy machine per one million populations. So there should be more than 160 units throughout the Bangladesh. Unfortunately we do have only 9 centers equipped with such machines. NICRH is currently equipped with four dual-energy linear accelerators and two cobalt 60 machines, high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy, CT simulator, conventional simulator, treatment planning system (TPS) and standard support equipments. We provide radiotherapy services from 7.30 am to 9.30 pm in two shifts. Only 11 Medical Technologists are posted here and 9 posts still vacant which creates undue pressure on the technologists. NICRH being upgraded to 300 bed hospital in April 2015 but required number of support staffs especially nurses are not sufficient.
2) The role of Medical Physicist is very important in the smooth running of the radiotherapy department. There are 6 posts of Medical Physicist all of which are presently vacant due to problem in service rules. Immediate attention should be given in this regard.
3) Prevention and research should get utmost priority in the cancer management. A dedicated center for cancer prevention and research should be established within the framework of NICRH.
4) Community oncology services should be started.
5) The initial work to inter-connect the existing departments with a central data base has begun. It should be completed as early as possible.
6) Population based cancer registry should be started in the community level making NICRH as the focal point.
