Preface
The establishment of the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) and development of Orthopaedic service in Bangladesh runs somewhat concurrently with War of liberation and treatment of the wounded freedom fighters. In early 1972, foreign aid and helping hands were extended to help this new country meet its immediate needs. At this time Father of National Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman felt the need of treatment of the wounded freedom fighters. He requested Dr. R.J.Garst, an American missionary orthopaedic surgeon to help the wounded freedom fighters. On his request Dr. R. J. Garst and his wife Mrs. Marie Garst started a 100 beded hospital at the OPD of Shaheed Suhrwardy Hospital. Post graduate courses in Orhtopaedic Surgery (D. Orth & M.S Ortho) and B. Sc. In Physiotherapy under the University of Dhaka was initiated in 1973. In1978, this orthopaedic hospital was shifted to a newbuilding consisting of 400 beds, the “Rehabilitation Institute & Hospital for the Disabled (RIHD).” In 1993 RIHD has estended 400 to 500 bedded. The name of this institute was later changed to National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in the year 2002. Since 1971, the population of Bangladesh has almost tripled from 5.5core to over 16crore. The disease pattern of the country has also changed. We have an increasing number of accidents and injuries. At any time 30% of all beds in the district and upzilla hospitals are occupied by trauma patients. Trauma is possibly the number one disease in the country now. As such, Orthopaedics has become an important discipline of medical science for management of trauma victims. NITOR is the highest referral and prime center of Orthopaedic service & training of Orthopaedic surgeons, nurse and physiotherapist in the country.By the help of honorable Prime minister this hospital is increasing 500 to 1000 bedded & the new building construction is already started.
