Preface
Health sector developed and contributed remarkably since war liberation.The rate of infant and maternal mortality has declined at a satisfactory level and average life expectancy has been increased.Health and demography survey 2000(report published in june2001) indicates that 7.02% of the total population of the country is belongs age group of above 60 years.The statisties says that the population among age group of above 60 years in increasing;as a consequence old age ailments are on increasing trend.Which is alarming.Besides Stroke and Paralysis ;Senile dementia Parkeinsonism.Spinal cord mjury Neuropathy,and Brain tumor are on increasing trend among the population of these age group.On the other hand,the death rate will be increased for the patient of Acute head injury.Acute stroke,GBS,Respiratory insufficiency.Meningities & Encephalitiis,Status epticus.Brain SOL if they are not Treatments of these diseases were unknown previously;with the technological development the treatment of these discases on paralysis,it is apprehended that there are valid statisties on paralysis,it is apprehended that there are about 30 lakhs of patient throughout the country leading unproductive life and burden on the family and society as well.The main cause of these diseases are Diabetes mellitus.Hypertension,Hypercholesterolemia and the arteriosclerosis of are considered as the major cause of these diseases.The death rate of stroke patient is 19% if not appropriately treated within one month,death rate is 31% amoung the patient within one year.Year treatment of these diseases are long term and highly expensive,and the treatment of the poor people becomes uncertain.As a consequencee,the production in different sectors in the country is jeopardized.The government is awre of the situation and sincere to provide modern and specialized treatment for the people.In view of the situation the government established a deparment of Neurology in Dhaka Medical College & Hospital in the year1994.
