Preface

Kurigram District is situated in north western part of Bangladesh under Rangpur Division; along the border of West Bengal and Assam states of India. The average maximum temperature is about 32.3 degree Celsius when average minimum temperature is about 11.2 degree Celsius. Heavy rainfall is usually observed during the rainy season like other parts of Bangladesh and the average annual rainfall is about 2931 mm. Kurigram is a highly disaster prone areas and is regularly affected by heavy rains, water logging, flash flood, river erosion etc.About 16 rivers are flowing through this district and the major rivers are Brahmaputra, Dharla, and Tista with minors are Dudhkumar, Phulkumar, Gangadhar, Jinjiram, Sonaburi, Halhali and Jalchira etc. It`s my great pleasure to publish this health bulletin 2016 of Kurigram district. Publication of the district health bulletin is one of the most significant events in the health service delivery system and an important step forward in planning and implementation of people-friendly health program. This bulletin contains not only health related information but will also serve as a tool for fixing new criteria and standard for further planning and achievement of the post-MDG targets. I would like to thank to all of my colleagues from district administration, officers and staffs of health department for their supports and helps in the accomplishment of this work. Finally, I wish to express my heartiest gratitude and thanks to the honorable Director of MIS, DGHS and Divisional Director (H) of Rangpur division for their cordial co-operation and all kinds of support. Important information and necessary issues you want to raise
All the data presented in the bulletin is very important for the health administration, authorities, service providers and beneficiaries for better understanding of the health services in Kurigram district. It brings positive force and encouragement among the staffs of health department to publish information of their own works, achievements and challenges. The most important success is that Kurigram district is on right track of achieving the target of MDG 4 & 5. Besides all of the achievements, I would like to mention several challenges that need to be resolved right away for better health services in the district. (1) Vacant post of MO, EMO, IMO and Anesthesia & Gynee Consultants at DH and all UHC should be filled up (2) Vacant posts of support staffs in UHC and DH need also to be filled up (3) Indoor health services in Roygonj 10 bedded RD in Nageswari should be made operational, currently outdoor services are only functional. (4) Internet facility and speed is very low in Kurigram which could be resolved for better reporting and information management (5) Electricity problem in UHC should be solved and expansion of electrify connection to all CC need to be considered. It is worth mentioning the Health Management Committee (HMC) at district and upazila level is active and meeting held regularly. Apart from that, the consultants, doctors, technicians at district hospital and all UHC sit together regularly to share their knowledge, expertise and to improve service quality and management in their own hospital. As such, I express my gratitude to all managers, doctors, nurses and other support staffs of health department for their hard work and contribution to ensure quality health services for the people of Kurigram district. Thanks to all. Dr. Md. Jaynal Abedin (Zillur) Civil Surgeon, Kurigram
