Preface

Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Bangladesh is achieving golden success in health sector. To match her vision National Institute of Cancer Research & Hospital (NICRH) is also trying to cater cancer services to the distressed patients coming here from every corners of the country. NICRH always kept the service receivers at the core of its attention. As day passes by, numbers of cancer patients are increasing at an alarming pace. To cope with these new demands we are reshaping our strategies and approaches regularly. We are working relentlessly to use all the available resources effectively. Sub-committees met regularly to foresee every possible drawback so that proper steps can be undertaken timely. Now NICRH is a 300 bedded hospital. But every day demands for more beds are unmet. To face the challenges of upcoming days the bed numbers should be increased to at least 500. Kind attention from the concerned authorities in this regard is requested. At present record keeping is done on manual basis. So some quality of data may be lost. After full automation of the process we will surely going to observe a sharp rise in the quality of data which will also help in the proper allocation of available resources including bed. We are giving emphasis on academic activities too. We believe specialist emerged from NICRH will help reducing the scarcity of cancer specialist in the country so that people can get all important cancer treatment at their door steps.

Important information and necessary issues you want to raise
1) National Institute of Cancer Research & Hospital (NICRH) is involved in cancer related services including cancer awareness, cancer screening, cancer diagnosis, cancer treatment and palliation. A lot of patients are managed here as OPD patients everyday. According to an international estimate there should be one radiotherapy (RT) machine per one million populations in a country. So there should be more than 160 RT machines available throughout the Bangladesh. Unfortunately we do have only 9 centers equipped with such machines. NICRH is currently equipped with four dual-energy linear accelerators and two cobalt 60 machines, high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy, CT simulator, conventional simulator, treatment planning system (TPS) and standard support equipments. We provide radiotherapy services from 7.30 am to 9.30 pm in two shifts. Only 11 Medical Technologists are posted here and 9 post still vacant which creates undue pressure on the technologists. At present NICRH is a 300 bed hospital but required number of support staffs especially nurses are not sufficient. 2) The role of Medical Physicist is very important in the smooth running of the radiotherapy department. There are 6 posts of Medical Physicist all of which are presently vacant due to problem in service rules. Immediate attention should be given in this regard. 3) Prevention and research should get utmost priority in the cancer management. A dedicated center for cancer prevention and research should be established within the framework of NICRH. 4) Community oncology services should be started. 5) Population based cancer registry should be started in the community level making NICRH as the focal point.
