I am glad to share the yearly report of National Institute of Ophthalmology as Health Bulletin.National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital is the apex Institute of ophthalmology in the country, established in 1978 and expanded to 250 beds in 2006. The institute is serving as an academic institute for Post graduate study in ophthalmology, tertiary service hospital for management of ocular diseases.The director of the institute is also the Line director of National Eye Care and working for the implementation of national blindness program throughout the country.This is a teaching institute and young medical graduates are trained here on different courses ( MS, FCPS, DO etc). There are 10 sub-specialty departments in the institute e.g. Cataract, Ophthalmology, Cornea, Glaucoma, Vitreo retina, Neuro Ophthalmology, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Community Ophthalmology, Oculoplasticy and Low vision services equipped with modern investigation tools, equipments and trained human resources serves as the center of excellence in eye care in Bangladesh and hopefully it will become one of the best centers in this region in near future.
The prevention of Blindness Program in Bangladesh National Eye Care is also one of the major program we have. Under NEC we have trained ophthalmologists of district hospitals on SICS, Paediatric eye care and retinal diseases, continuous training of the nurses and PEC workers are held and CME programs are undertaken. Regular outreach camps are arranged to reach the under-served and unreached marginalized population.
With quality of eye care service, appropriate planning of eye care and development of a new generation of skilled dedicated manpower we hope to achieve Vision 2020 goal by 2020.
