Preface

Chittagong Medical College Hospital established in the year 1957 and started functioning in the present location in 1960 with only 120 beds & few out patient services. Later it was upgraded to 500,750,1010,1313* ( * This only administrative but no functional benefit found) beds in 1969,1996,2001 and 2013 respectively. This is one of the second largest hospital in the country & only referral hospital (Level 3) in greater Chittagong covering 40,000 sq. km. area serving health care services for about 30 millions population. At the beginning of this hospital, there were only two departments Surgery, Obs. & Gynae. The general hospital at that time used to serve as department of Medicine and allied specialities till 1969. Daily 2400 to 2600 patients remain admitted to this hospital. Admission turn over is 450-650 patients per day. Outdoor patient attendance 2000 to 2600. At present its 6 storied building accomodating all ward and departments of all subjects and specialities. But at this moment it is very much essential to have another building keeping provision to accommodate at least 1500 patient. Inspite of a lot of constraints this hospital is rendering all types of general and specialised treatment available in the country. All this possible because of devotion and motivation of all employees of this hospital Brigadier General Khondakar Shahidul Ghani Director Chittagong Medical College Hospital

Important information and necessary issues you want to raise
Some critical defficiencies of this hospital: I would like to address some of the important issues which if solved will help us to achieve better in terms of patients care. (1) It is the only govt. hospital outside the capital performing open heart surgery, having largest NICU (SCANU),PICU with full swing Burn and Plastic surgery department. (2) New post for the Doctor, Nurses, Lab Technicians, Ward Master and other Supporting staff should be created in proportion to the 1313 beds. (3) Future expansions of CMCH phase II should start as early as possible. (4) Lack of residential facilities of Officers and Staffs: According to the number of officer and staffs the residential facilities are very minimum. As a result of scarcity of residential facilities patient care is hampered as doctors/staffs are coming from distant places for their shifting duties. (5) Proposals for creating new posts for ICU, Casualty, Plastic Surgery and Urology Units have been established and the activities of these units are going on. But new posts are not created yet which creates serious problems in providing patient care. The proposals for creation of new posts in these units have sent to MOH & FW. (6) The following major equipments & establishments are essential to render better service to the ailing people viz. CT Scan, MRI, Digital X-Ray, Color Doppler USG(upgrade version), Arthoscope, Cobalt-60 Machine & massive renovation of OT complexes CSSD & Laundry Plant (8) In addition: i. Multistoried buildings for stores & supply dept. ii. Increase budget for cleaning & waste management.iii. Creation of security force dept. of 100 personnel. iv. Separate budget for medical gas & gas related services. v. Dedication of financial power to the institutional head to use some percentage of user fee. (9) Land: Total area of CMCH is 80 acres. But now about 65 acres of land is in our position. The rest of the land is occupied by illegal occupants. We tried to get back the lands but they sued in the high court and now it is in status co position.
