Preface

It is our great pleasure to publish this health bulletin to document the activities that was performed over the last one year in the Bangladesh Institute of Tropical & Infectious Diseases (BITID). The institute is the national institute for tropical and infectious diseases in the country and is dedicated to serve the nation in the fight against such diseases like malaria, kalaazar and other emerging-reimerging infectious diseases to help facilitate the achievement of the SDG. As for-itself BITID was inaugurated by the honourable prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the year 2013 with the vision of developing it into a center of excellence through research, capacity building and service. At the moment, the institute is functioning through its own outdoor and the makeshift indoor in the adjacent 20 bed Infectious Disease Hospital; the super-specialized hospital that is to be built for itself is long awaited. Still we think we had provided some services to the people with the human-resources and willpower that we have; but wish we would be better performing if the 100 bed indoor facility is built and all the vacant posts of professors, Associate professors, Assistant professors and other medical officers & staff are filled up. At the end, I would like to thank and congratulate the initiator of the annual health bulletin of the DGHS for the wonderful step towards the annual audit and digitalization of the nation's health system.

Director

Important information and necessary issues you want to raise
The BITID has an aesthetic modern building and is situated in a place where it has all the potentials to develop itself as a center of excellence in the field of infectious diseases research and treatment and help the country grow up to be a middle income country therein. But the institute has some important issues that are to be dealt with immediately. I) The facility is a proposed 7 storied building where the 100 beded hospital is planned to be constructed at 4th story upwards. But at the moment the institute is constructed up to the third floor which contains the outdoor facility, the administrative block and the laboratory; the makeshift indoor is being maintained at the adjacent 20 bed IDH hospital. II) The upward extension of the building needs to be started immediately for the hospital is serving only partially with the existing outdoor facility and the temporary indoor which is diminishing the institute's potential to serve the country properly. III) All the vacant post should be filled up as soon as possible so that this institute can open courses in Diploma in tropical medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H), MD (Tropical Medicine) & PhD in Tropical Medicine in future. IV) Unification of the two institutions BITID & attached 20 bed Infectious Diseases Hospital in one financial Code for the better administrative & financial management. V) Dedication of financial power to the institutional Head to use some percentage of User fee. One of the main aspects of the activity of this institute is research in the field of tropical-infectious diseases, for which there needs the facility's incorporation into the NTP network as well as collaborations with communicable and non-communicable diseases control network of the DGHS. The postgraduate courses are to be started immediately as well. As this hospital is about 15 km away from the city it is rather imperative to say that without proper dwelling facilities for the doctors, nurses and fourth class employees the hospital cannot run at its best. For this there needs to be quarters that requires to be built in the hospital premise as soon as possible. At last we would like to express our great delight in the ability to present this health bulletin to the Government of Bangladesh and the DGHS.
